L'archivio storico

Archival holdings, finding aids, and access to digital resources

The Historical Archives of the National Academy of the Lincei preserve the living memory of the Institution and document its scientific, cultural, and administrative activity. The records trace the various phases of the Academy’s history: from the early pre-unification experiences — the Società fisico-matematica and the Collegio Umbro Fuccioli, the Accademia Caetani, then the Accademia dei nuovi Lincei and the Pontifical Accademia dei nuovi Lincei—through the Royal Academy of the Lincei and the Royal Academy of Italy, up to today’s National Academy of the Lincei.

The richness of the preserved papers attests not only to the Academy’s evolution, but also to its contribution to the intellectual life of the country.

Alongside the institutional holdings, the documentary heritage has been enriched over time by personal papers, the result of donations or acquisitions, and archives on deposit or on loan for free use, which enhance its historical value and offer a unique testimony to Italian scientific and cultural life.

Most of the records have been inventoried; the remaining documentation is being processed and will be made progressively accessible thanks to ongoing descriptive work.

To facilitate consultation, the published finding aids are also being migrated to a digital format.

The finding aids for the following institutional fonds are already available online:

  • Early Academies
  • Royal Academy of the Lincei
  • Royal Academy of Italy

The finding aid for the National Academy of the Lincei fonds is being updated and will be published as soon as it is complete.

The remaining finding aids can currently be consulted in their original format.
