Profilo

Peter Markowich (born December 16 1956, Vienna) is an applied mathematician specialising in partial differential equations. He earned an M.S. (1979), Dr. Techn. (1980), and Habilitation (1984) in Applied and Numerical Mathematics from the Technical University of Vienna. In the early 1980s, he started his career as postdoc at the Mathematics Research Center of the University of Wisconsin-Madison followed by Assistant Professorships at the University of Texas at Austin and TU Vienna, and by Full Professorships at Purdue University, TU Berlin, University of Linz, the University of Vienna and the University of Cambridge .

Since 2011 he has served as Al Khawarizmi Distinguished Professor in Applied Mathematics and Computational Science at KAUST, Saudi Arabia. His research output consists of over 200 journal articles, focusing on mathematical and numerical analysis of partial differential equations in classical and quantum kinetic theory, dispersive and diffusive equations, Wigner transforms, functional inequalities, inverse problems, and mathematical biology.

Markowich is Fellow of the American Mathematical Society, IMA, European Academy of Sciences (EURASC), Academia Europea, European Academy of Sciences and Arts and a Foreign Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
