The conference is part of a series entitled “The Future of Humanity,” organized by the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei to promote public awareness of the major issues concerning human progress and the future of humankind, and to foster dialogue among experts from diverse backgrounds and fields of interest. How to feed the continuously growing population of our planet—especially in the face of dramatic climate change—represents one of the most difficult challenges humanity must confront in order to secure its future. The conference “The Food of the Future” addresses this challenge by focusing on four broad main themes: Global visions and policies for food in the 21st century and beyond: perspectives from major transnational institutions, developed countries, and developing countries. New food production systems: future perspectives and scenarios for agriculture; climate change and new cultivated species; the agroecological approach to managing agri-food systems; microorganisms and new food technologies; cellular systems for food production; insects and new protein sources. Food safety and quality: new challenges in food safety; diet and health; intolerances and allergies; biodiversity and health; nutrigenomics. Consumers, economy, culture, and policy: sustainable transformation; the perception of innovation among consumers and in the media; policies for food research in the future.
