Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei supports UN resolution to establish an independent Scientific Panel on the Effects of Nuclear War

The Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei recently proposed the development of a Science7 Statement on Nuclear Arms Control. The document, drafted and endorsed by the National Academies of the G7 countries in June 2024, highlights the pressing need for a renewed commitment to achieving a world free of nuclear weapons.

Hence, the Lincei Academy strongly supports the recent resolution to establish an independent Scientific Panel on the Effects of Nuclear War approved by the United Nations General Assembly First Committee on Disarmament and International Security, consisting of 21 members to be appointed by the UN Secretary-General, selected on the basis of their leading scientific expertise across relevant disciplines, with the task of examining the physical effects and societal consequences of a nuclear war on a local, regional and planetary scale.

The establishment of a committee to facilitate discussions on this important issue will provide a platform for dialogue and action that can lead to meaningful progress in our collective efforts towards disarmament.
