The Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei reiterates its full support to the ‘Statement by the ALLEA Presidency in support of Ukraine, its citizen and academic institutions’ published on 25 February 2022, which unambiguously condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and calls for an immediate end to the war. .
The Academy also declares that any decisions regarding administrative sanctions such as the membership suspension of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus from ALLEA should be discussed with the General Assembly, given the complexity of the context and the dramatic nature of the war situation. .
The Academy dei Lincei also points out that not even during the long years of the Cold War were serious administrative sanctions imposed on the Academies behind the Iron Curtain.
Finally, we must keep in mind that several hundred Russian scientists have signed and made public a document explicitly condemning the aggression against Ukraine and holding Russia entirely responsible for unleashing a dramatic and unjustified war. Many of these distinguished scientists, who have demonstrated lucidity, independence of thought and great courage, are members of the Russian Academy.
