The Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei has made available the inventory of the Giuseppe Ugo Papi Archive, donated to the institution in 1969 by the distinguished economist and Lincei Fellow himself. Papi, who served as Rector of Sapienza University of Rome for thirteen years and was a leading figure in international economic diplomacy, chose the Lincei as the custodians of his “mementoes of a lifetime of research”.
The collection is a true reflection of 20th-century Italian and international history. The papers include manuscripts, galley proofs, studies and a vast body of correspondence documenting the network of international relations forged by Papi, from his role as Secretary-General of the International Institute of Agriculture to his part in securing Rome as the headquarters of the FAO.
Following several reorganisation efforts over the decades (including those in 1990 and 2013), the documents have recently undergone cataloguing work aimed at overcoming the initial disorganisation and making this heritage fully accessible to scholars. The archive now makes it possible to reconstruct not only Papi’s scholarly output – he was the author of hundreds of publications in the fields of economics and finance – but also his work on legislative and institutional committees during a period of particular significance for Italian history (search the Archive).
Please also note that the catalogue of Papi’s private Library – which is of great interest to scholars of economics, having been acquired by the Lincei many years ago and housed in the Academic Library – can be freely consulted via this link: search the book catalogue
