Statement from the Brazilian Academy of Sciences on Threats
to Science and Education in the United States of America
The Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) expresses its deep concern regarding the recent attacks on science and education in the United States of America, including drastic cuts in research funding, restrictions and censorship of studies on climate change, social inequalities, gender, public health and medical research, among other topics, as well as the dismantling of diversity, equity, and inclusion policies.
The severe reduction in funding and personnel for institutions as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Department of Energy (DOE), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) undermine American science and directly impact the global capacity to address challenges such as pandemics, climate emergencies, food production, besides slowing down technological advancements.
The interruption of international collaborations and the withdrawal from multilateral institutions such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Human Rights Council (UN HRC) hinder the sharing of knowledge, which is essential for addressing global issues.
Science is a common good of humanity and its weakening in any nation affects the entire global community. We express solidarity with the professors, researchers, students, and institutions affected by these measures. The Brazilian Academy of Sciences reaffirms its commitment to academic freedom, critical thinking, and the value of scientific knowledge as the foundation for the development and well-being of societies.
