Profile

Marco Sammartino is a Professor of Mathematical Physics at the University of Palermo. His scientific interests include the study of partial differential equations (PDEs), with particular reference to theoretical and computational fluid dynamics, biomathematics, and pattern formation. His work is known for having significantly contributed to the understanding of the small viscosity limit of the Navier-Stokes equations and the behavior of boundary layers by demonstrating the convergence to the solution of the Euler and Prandtl equations away and close to the boundaries.
As a visiting professor, he has visited important international institutions, including the Department of Mathematics of UCLA, the IPAM of UCLA, the University of Southern California, the University of Arizona, the MSRI of UC Berkeley, Paris VI, and the Université Gustave Eiffel.
Marco Sammartino was awarded the Cataldo Agostinelli and Angiola Gili Agostinelli Prize for Pure and Applied Mechanics and Mathematical Physics by the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. He has also been the Principal Investigator of several scientific projects, including PRIN 2017 and PRINPNRR 2022.
He is currently President of the Scientific Council of the Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica. From 2013 to 2019, he was a member of the Scientific Council of the National Group for Mathematical Physics (GNFM); from 2019 to 2023, he served in the Scientific Council of INdAM.
