The G8+5 Academies' Meeting is a meeting of the science academies of the G8 countries and five others (Brazil, China, India, Mexico, South Africa) organized every year by the national academy of the country hosting the G8 Summit. Through this initiative the scientific community intends to provide its contribution to Presidents and Prime Ministers of the G8 countries by elaborating joint statements on a range of vital global issues (such as climate change, health in developing countries, etc.) included in the Summit’s agenda.
On the occasion of the Italian G8 Presidency and in view of the Summit of July 2009, the meeting of academies has been therefore organized by the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and has been held in Rome on 26-27 March 2009.
In 2009, for the first time, Egypt's national academy of sciences has attended the meeting as an observer.
The key topics have been:
1) New technologies for the production and conservation of energy;
2) International migration flows.
The participating academies have released a joint statement entitled Climate change and the transformation of energy technologies for a low carbon future, which has been officially presented to the Italian Government on 11 June 2009.
Together with the G8+5 document, the NASAC (Network of African Science Academies) statement Brain drain in Africa has also been presented.
